Located approximately 47 miles south of San Jose, California, the City of Hollister is a community experiencing exponential residential and commercial growth due to its proximity to Silicon Valley. The City of Hollister is at an exciting confluence of residential and commercial development and seeks a City Engineer to process development submittals at the same time provide insight into modern engineering practices and standards.
Ideal Candidate: The City Engineer/Engineering Manager plays a critical role of visibility within the community and demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service. The successful candidate will be action-oriented and committed to excellence, balancing the demands of new development and regional projects and have the ability to develop clear goals and objectives in alignment with the City's vision.
The candidate must possess exceptional interpersonal skills, positive nature, passionate about quality work, an ability to effectively represent the City and communicate easily with a wide variety of audiences, as well as be able to facilitate divergent groups. He/She will take initiative, develop new ideas and solutions, and be open to suggestions from the community. The City Engineer/Engineering Manager will work directly for the Development Services Director but work independently and manage the Associate Engineer (vacant), Utilities Engineer/Capital Improvements and Public Works Inspector.
The City Engineer must have proven experience, leadership abilities and be capable of managing effectively in a team-oriented environment. Ideally, the City Engineer/Engineering Manager must have the ability to successfully plan, organize and direct the activities of the engineering division and take it to the next level. The ideal candidate must be a problem solver with a "Can Do" attitude.
Possession of a current registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California as certified by the Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in the State of California.
Possession of a valid California Land Surveyor License issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors is desired (A Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors prior to January 1st, 1982 satisfies this requirement).

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited College or University with major course work in Civil Engineering or a closely related field with at least five years of experience in engineering and three years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
Additional Salary Information: The City contracts with the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The City’s Retirement Formula for Classic Members as defined by the Public Employee’s Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) is 2% at Age 60. All new Employees as defined by the Public Employee’s Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) are subject to the CalPERS 2% @ Age 62 Retirement Formula.
The City of Hollister is a General Law City and is governed by a “Council Manager” form of government. The Council, as the legislative body, represents the citizens of Hollister, and is empowered by the Municipal Code to formulate citywide policy, enact local legislation, adopt budgets, and appoint the City Manager and City Attorney. As of the November 2012 election, the City Council consists of four Council Members who are each elected by voters in his/her district and serve staggered four-year terms. The Vice Mayor is elected from among themselves every year at the first meeting in January. The Mayor is elected by all the voters in Hollister for a two year term. Elections are held in November of even-numbered years. The City Treasurer is also an elected official of the City.
