The Division of Hydrologic Sciences at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) seeks a junior-level Staff or Assistant Research Scientist, Surface Water Hydrologist to be located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The successful applicant will work with DRI research personnel to perform hydrologic studies with an emphasis on analysis and modeling of surface water hydrology and hydraulics in both ephemeral and perennial flow systems in arid environments, primarily within the state of Nevada and the southwestern U.S. This work includes: performing flood assessments; delineation of regulatory floodplains; hydrometeorological analysis; forensic studies of flood damage; and hydrologic, hydraulic, and sediment transport modeling, including two-dimensional hydraulic modeling. Additional work may include support of other environmental work involving surficial processes; sediment and contaminant transport studies; and occasional field and instrumentation support for surface water hydrology, hydrogeology, geology, and soil physics related projects.
The successful applicant will be directly involved in all aspects of scientific research, to include: design of experiments; collecting, managing and analyzing hydrologic and other environmental data; and report writing. Some travel will be required. Staff and assistant research scientists may present results in project reports, conference proceedings, and/or peer-reviewed journal publications.
The Division of Hydrologic Sciences conducts a wide variety of hydrologic and environmental research that often involves complex, high-quality data collection. This research can range from the routine to cutting-edge and involve work in every type of hydrologic environment. Along with superior technical skills, DRI is seeking an individual who brings innovation and a sense of scientific inquiry to their work. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in related scientific/environmental disciplines to solve problems and improve our understanding of hydrologic environments and processes. As DRI is a soft-money research institute, ultimately the successful candidate will be expected to develop research funding opportunities through interactions with colleagues.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • U.S.A. citizenship is required and the ability to obtain a security clearance is mandatory. • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in hydrology, civil engineering, or related field if the latter had an emphasis on, or direct application to, activities described above. • The equivalent of two years full-time professional experience relevant to the activities described above. • Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic analyses. • Experience with standard hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software. • Experience with hydrologic/hydraulic and environmental data compilation, quality assessment, and analysis; and report writing. • Demonstrated ability to maintain quality, safety, and control standards. • Strong oral and written communication skills. • Demonstration of vested interest in their work. • Team player with diverse interests and excellent interpersonal skills. • Nevada driver's license or ability to obtain one by hire date.
