Engineer
City of Harrisonburg
Department of Planning and Community Development. Full-time position with benefits. Preferred starting salary range: $54,891 - $63,128. Position reviews engineered comprehensive site plans and ensures compliance with the City's Design and Construction Standards Manual (DCSM), Stormwater Management Ordinance, Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance, and other applicable land development regulations. Position coordinates work with other agencies and departments; serves as project design/inspection engineer and manager of engineering and construction related projects; inspects projects for conformance to construction plans and specifications. Position provides technical assistance to engineers, contractors, developers and the general public that are planning land improvement and construction activities; assists with the acquisition of properties for public use; supervises and directs subordinate personnel; prepares a variety of technical reports and gives presentations; prepares and maintains engineering files and records. Position designs and prepares specifications, schedules, and cost estimates for projects; processes monthly pay estimates; administers design and construction contracts; assists with the preparation and monitoring of the division budget.

Physical Requirements: This is light work requiring the exertion of 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree with coursework in civil engineering, environmental science, or a related field and considerable experience in professional civil engineering work with some supervisory experience preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid driver's license, required. Certification in Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) is required. VADEQ certification in erosion and sediment control and/or stormwater management is preferred. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred.
