Sidra Medicine is a one-of-a-kind academic medical center located in Doha, Qatar – the heart of the Middle East – where world-class scientists and physicians provide innovative, research-driven healthcare for women and children in the region. At the nation’s largest pediatric hospital, with over 15,000 patient visits a month, clinicians and researchers collaborate closely, applying state-of-the-art research technologies to answer various critical health-care questions, promoting translational research and empowering the hospital to be at the forefront of precision medicine.
With a capacity for 20,000 genomes per year, the Sidra Medicine Research Branch hosts the largest sequencing facility in the Middle East and is a provider of NGS services to key regional initiatives, including the Qatar Genome Program (QGP) – an impressive population-based project that combines whole genome sequencing and other omics data with comprehensive phenotypic data. The QGP, with its ambitious vision to “position Qatar as a pioneer in the implementation of advanced personalized healthcare,” has already sequenced over 10,000 whole genomes and generated a wealth of omics data.
Being at the intersection of Asia and Africa, we get a uniquely admixed population with high rates of consanguinity, perfect for both population studies and rare diseases. The high rates of complex disorders such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome, especially in children, also make Sidra the ideal site for investigating these diseases at high resolution. Overall, access to the large-scale population project and the high rate of endogamy and genetic disorders in Qatar provides a treasure trove of data for any geneticist or anyone with the passion to innovate or revolutionize clinical care.
Research at Sidra is focused on precision medicine across the entire spectrum of pediatric and maternal healthcare, including Mendelian disorders, population genomics, clinical informatics, AI and machine learning in predictive medicine.
