The City of Santa Maria seeks a Principal Civil Engineer/Traffic Engineer to administer the streets, fleet, and facilities divisions. The Traffic Engineer will have expertise in design and engineering management to ensure City-owned infrastructure, assets, and facilities are constructed and modified in a functional and safe condition. The Traffic Engineer is responsible for direct oversight of three supervisors overseeing Fleet, Streets, and Facilities with an additional 46 indirect reports. This position will also develop and manage an annual operating budget of approximately $10M. The ideal candidate will have experience building teams and programs, budget development and administration, transportation planning, and providing customer service excellence. THE DEPARTMENT & POSITION Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the Traffic Engineer is responsible for an annual operating budget of $10M and three divisions: Street Maintenance, Fleet Services, and Facilities Maintenance.
- Traffic: Organized under the Street Maintenance Division, this program manages the operations and maintenance of all traffic control devices including traffic signals, signage, and striping.
- Street Maintenance Division: Provides maintenance for the City's street infrastructure. The goal is to provide a high standard and well-maintained street system for pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic within the City limits.
- Fleet Services Division: Provides vehicle and equipment maintenance and replacement services in an efficient, fiscally responsible, and courteous manner for over 400 fleet vehicles and equipment, two maintenance shops, and a fueling facility.
- Facilities Maintenance Division: Provides technical services to City departments by operating and maintaining over 35 buildings, support facilities, parking structures and several emergency communication facilities; analyzing energy efficiency opportunities; monitoring mechanical/electrical systems for optimization of operation; conceiving of new maintenance projects; budgeting for and maintaining adequate tools, material, and information to assure effective progress on scheduled work.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: - Ideally, five years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the field of civil engineering or a closely related field; and
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil or mechanical engineering or a related field.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
- Required licenses and/or certifications:
o. Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in one of the United States required at hire. Registration in the State of California is required within 12 months of hire. o. Registration as a Licensed Traffic Engineer within the State of California required within 18 months of hire.
