Sr. Signal Engineer

Metra's Engineering Department is staffed with over 800 employees who work tirelessly applying technology and engineering principles in the design, construction, operation, and management of our network of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment so that customers can enjoy a safe, comfortable, economical, and dependable transit experience. The Senior Signal Engineer will apply railroad signal engineering principles, processes and procedures necessary to perform design and detail engineering. Implement wayside signaling interlockings and crossing installations across the Metra six-county region. Review software programming for microprocessor-based applications and reviews signal system specifications prepared by signal consultants. Design and check circuit prints for capital improvement projects funded by Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), which includes wayside signal applications, route and aspect charts, braking calculations, and highway crossing warning systems. Develop specifications for signal systems and oversee the development of Metra’s signal standards and typicals. Investigate and make recommendations on any reports of malfunctions of signal systems or equipment. Inspect signal equipment and installations to ensure compliance with Metra standards and specifications; analyze, plan and specify signal systems and equipment. Coordinate proposed improvements and develop documents for outside agencies.
