The Director of the Genomics Shared Resource is a team leader who possesses a broad-based knowledge of genomics technologies and applications. This person works under the guidance of the Senior Director of Molecular and Cellular Scientific Resources to assist in setting the direction, overall operation, and administration of the shared resource. In addition to operational responsibilities, other activities include providing technical development efforts to advance genomics research support to the Fred Hutch research community.
Assist senior director in defining and implementing strategic objectives, overall performance standards, generating operational budgets, and other guidelines for lab operations. In addition, this role will be classified as a staff scientist and will require hands-on work at the bench and with implementing new technologies.
Primary Job Duties
Oversee the Genomics Manager responsible for day-to-day operations of a genomics-based technology laboratory. Respond to needs of staff to maintain productive workflow and positive morale.
Support core manager in mentoring staff and implement corrective action when performance issues arise.
Build and maintain relationships with internal and external researcher groups.
Provide consulting to user-base and guide them on employing best practices.
Develop new assays and technologies that can be leveraged to provide services or meet the needs of researchers.
Collaborate with partner in Bioinformatics (Associate Director) to ensure a seamless integration of data generation and analysis and coordination of operations and finance of the core.
Partner with Hutch Data Core and HutchBASE teams to develop and maintain a forward-looking strategy to ensure the Resource maintains a strong standing at Fred Hutch that meets the needs of its user base.
Responsible for revenue and expense management of the core. Work with the senior director and SR administrative team on financial management, including providing revenue and expense projections to aid in financial forecasting, billing, supporting collections, and other financial needs.
Document and perform yearly performance reviews for direct reports.
Maintain expert-level knowledge of protocols and technologies used in the lab.
Provide input to senior director by researching products and protocols to improve lab performance and/or efficiencies.
Provide documentation for research proposals, scientific publications, and Fred Hutch communications.
Minimum requirements include a PhD in a scientific discipline, with at least 10 years of professional genomics laboratory experience.
A working knowledge of financial planning and core lab operations is also desired.
The candidate must possess extensive experience with using genomics technologies, as well as possess laboratory skills in molecular biology and biochemistry.
Working knowledge of single cell and spatial transcriptomics assays are a plus.
In addition, the candidate must possess the ability to work independently and have experience troubleshooting complicated technologies.
The ideal candidate will also have a strong track record of mentoring and supporting technical staff, can provide appropriate feedback and corrective action, and can motivate others to perform at a high-level.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are essential.
