The low cost of living enables a high quality of life, where one can have suburban living in the heart of a great metropolis. Houston is also The Energy Capital of the World, second only to New York City in the number of Fortune 500 company headquarters, a major healthcare center, and home of the largest US port in total foreign trade and imports.
Houston is home to the Texas Medical Center (TMC) comprised of over 60 institutions, 120,000 employees, and provides care to over 10 million patients each year on this main campus. The GDP for the Texas Medical Center is over $22 billion, which would make it the eighth-largest business district in the United States and 3rd largest business ecosystem. More research is done in this campus than anywhere in the world, so people come to TMC to produce breakthrough research, and much of the research of many of the drugs that are discovered happens on this campus. TMC is in the process of creating a comprehensive ecosystem to translate discovery into advancing human care. Opportunities for research at the intersection of technology, information systems, and healthcare abound in the collaboration that the C T Bauer college is forging with TMC.
