Located in west-central Wisconsin, Altoona is bordered by the City of Eau Claire to the west and south, Lake Altoona, Eau Claire River, and the Town of Seymour to the north, and by the Town of Washington to the east and southeast. Regionally, the City is within the greater Chippewa Valley straddling Eau Claire County and Chippewa County, which includes the City of Eau Claire, City of Chippewa Falls, Village of Lake Hallie, and surrounding towns. As of 2023, the City of Altoona had 9,320 residents and encompassed approximately 3,200 acres or 5 square miles. The City is surrounded by high-quality natural resources including lakes, rivers, streams, woodlands, wetlands, and agricultural lands. Some of the most notable are Lake Altoona, Otter Creek, Eau Claire River, Chippewa River, and Lake Wissota.
