Please check out this exciting opportunity to join the City of Bloomington's Engineering Department as our Traffic Engineer! This is a new position for the City and the person in this role will have an awesome chance to help shape the team and community. Some of the projects the person in this position will help guide include a citywide signal retiming project and smart traffic signal system evaluation, the development of a high-frequency east/west crosstown transit route, a major north/south downtown corridor study, and the development of the City’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Action Plan.
The Traffic Engineer will be the manager of the Operation Division of the Engineering Department which is responsible for investigating transportation inquiries and coordinating potential changes to traffic control devices that optimize the mobility, safety, and accessibility of the City’s transportation system in an equitable and sustainable manner for people of all ages and abilities using all modes of transportation. Manage staff that assists in data collection, technical evaluations, and oversight of use of the City’s public right-of-way. Assist in the review and oversight of city capital projects, private development/utility capital projects, and transportation planning initiatives.
The mission of the Engineering Department is to serve the community by overseeing use of the public right-of-way. This effort includes permitting and inspecting the work done in the right-of-way by other entities, managing the City’s capital infrastructure projects, and making data-driven decisions regarding transportation operations. The Department improves the safety, mobility, and accessibility of the multimodal transportation system by requiring high-quality work supporting the vision and goals of the City’s adopted plans. Minimum knowledge equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
A registered professional engineer who has practiced traffic engineering for at least one year; or a certificate of engineer-in-training and have practiced traffic engineering for at least two years; or have practiced traffic engineering for at least ten years. If not licensed in the State of Indiana, the ability to be licensed in the State within six months of being hired. Certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer is preferred.
Experience in public service and staff supervision is preferred.
Knowledge and ability to utilize accepted transportation engineering and planning principles and practices.
Familiarity with intelligent transportation systems, traffic signal operation and equipment, and work zone traffic safety is preferred.
